Efficient sonochemical degradation of hexachlorobenzene in a model sediment

Abstract
There has been increasing concern over contamination of the environment by persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), because of their highly persistent, bioconcentrative and toxic properties. In particular, the contamination of sediments may have a significant effect on the environment, because this contamination is closely related to the contamination of POPs in aquatic organisms. In this study, the potential of sonochemistry for degrading HCB in a model sediment sample is evaluated. Further, the effects of ultrasonic irradiation and its combination with the Fenton reaction or the addition of a surfactant are examined.
