Somatic chromosome numbers in the root tips of 22 species in 8 genera of Amaryllidaceae, Anthericaceae, Asphodelaceae, Convallariaceae, Palmae and Poaceae were examined. All showed a wide range of chromosome numbers between 2n = 14 to 72 . The species of Brachiaria decumbens (2n = 48) and Pennisetum purpureum (two varieties, 2n = 26, 22) are different in chromosome numbers from earlier reports. The chromosome numbers of Aloe juvenna (2n = 28), A. prinslooi (2n = 14) and Brachiaria ruziziensis (2n = 18) have not previously been reported.
